Hemorrhoids or commonly known as piles are painful, swollen veins found in the lower portion of the rectum or anus. Hemorrhoids are formed due to increase pressure in the veins as a result of constipation, pregnancy, sitting for long periods of time, and anal infections. They are sometimes described as varicosities of anal and rectal veins. There are two types of hemorrhoids: internal and external hemorrhoids. Internal hemorrhoids are those found in the rectum (the lower part of the colon or large intestine) while external hemorrhoids are those found at the anal opening and may hang outside the anus. Some people could have internal hemorrhoids but they are not knowledgeable of their presence until they already cause troublesome symptoms. Below are the descriptions of hemorrhoid symptoms. If you are experiencing them, it is time to visit your doctor for a checkup.
Hemorrhoid Symptoms
-You feel persistent itching in your anus.
-You feel pain in your anus especially while sitting.
-There is a streak of bright red blood in your stool, in the tissue paper and/or the toilet bowl.
-You feel pain during bowel movements especially when you are constipated.
-An obvious symptom of hemorrhoid is the presence of hard tender lumps near your anus.
Hemorrhoid Examinations and Tests
A doctor will use anoscope and sigmoidoscope to look at internal hemorrhoids or hemorrhoids that were formed in the rectum. Stool guaiac test is also used to show the presence of blood.
